A CITY A WEEK...DUBLIN, IRELAND...PART II

The second of a two-part post appears below--and don't forget for those interested in all things Irish, I will be leading a discussion of James Joyce's The Dubliners this Thursday, July 14, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. as part of Scuppernong Book's, Travel Talk series.  Stop by if you are in town--304 South Elm Street, Greensboro, NC.  Hope to see you there!

I may spend much of my life these days creating itineraries so it may sound ironic that I find the task of creating recommendation lists positively terrifying.

There is a reason, though, for this seeming paradox.  Itineraries have constraints while recommendation lists, at least in theory, do not.  There is a kind of logistical circle around an itinerary--a circle bound by the logistics of time--how many days will we be there?--and geography--what is the logical sequence of visits on any given day? Recommendations feel boundaryless.  Leave one treasure off and you run the risk of complete failure--at least in the eyes of one (or potentially many) readers. 

With Dublin, there is another and potentially equally fraught challenge--many of its 'must do's' can feel a bit canned--pitched to, say, paying shallow tribute to a literary figure or perhaps to satisfying a visitor's need for 'real' traditional music--when the more authentic experiences now tend to lie elsewhere in the city's cultural life.  

For this reason,  I was especially grateful to come across the video version of the November 2014, New York Times '36 Hours in Dublin' (click here).  It captures the charm, the scruff and the joy of this very distinctive place and of her proud inhabitants while focusing almost exclusively on the new cultural currents and creativity surging through the city since its well-documented financial implosion in the mid-aughts.

The video and its related print article also dare to do what I find so daunting--draw a circle around a list of suggested experiences.  Then again The Times does have a tried and true boundary with '36 Hours'. Not only is it a well-tested conceit--it is also a pretty short time window. ('Left something off?  So sorry! Had to draw the line somewhere...')  Nonetheless, hats off.  These spots are always rewarding and well done and this one particularly so.

But the truth is Studio Traveler is mine and nobody else's.  No dodging allowed. And another truth? I do, in fact, have a list (and it's a pretty long one) for Dublin sites that I can highly recommend.  So here is my list of recommendations in no particular order of love or preference and with complete--make that certain--knowledge that there is more to love in Dublin than I could ever possibly draw a circle around...


Trinity College  and The Book of Kells

Trinity College, founded in 1592, is a gorgeous oasis in the heart of Dublin, very worth a visit for all sorts of reasons.  Undoubtedly the most renowned of these is Trinity College Library and its Book of Kells, a 7th century illustrated manuscript on permanent and glorious display. 

Chester Beatty Library

It is not a coincidence that libraries figure prominently in a list of attractions in this word-obsessed city. In the case of The Chester Beatty, one could say this is almost a museum more than library--a museum dedicated to books and to knowledge.  It collections include some of the most world's important examples of Old and New Testaments, Islamic and Far Eastern texts and artifacts. 

The Irish Museum of Modern Art

IMMA has a fine permanent collection of Modern Art while its temporary exhibitions feature living Irish artists and so provide a valuable window into the contemporary life of the country--not to mention that the museum itself is housed in a knock-out attraction--the former Royal Hospital Kilmainham, originally opened in 1684. 

Hugh Lane Gallery

The Hugh Lane, opened in 1908, is thought to be the first museum in the world dedicated solely to Modern Art. Today it houses an interesting collection spanning two centuries, beginning with the works of important late 19th century French masters and extending through to the work of such contemporary giants as Sean Scully and  Francis Bacon.

The Abbey Theater

 William Butler Yeats was a founding member of this hugely influential and revered theater that retains its stature even as it is now well into its second century.  While the Abbey tours frequently in the US, there is special pleasure and power to be found in seeing excellent Irish drama on its native soil.

St Stephen's Green

The great green heart of Dublin, 22 acre square with a large central pond, St Stephen's Green is what all great city parks should be--a place to gather and to be refreshed by a break from the great gray weight of the urban landscape.

Bewley's

I just love this wonderful--and elegant--coffee house which was opened in 1920's and in the best possible way shows every inch of her age.  She is proudly from another era. 

Avoca

Purveyor of a wide variety fine Irish goods, it's their blankets that make me swoon.  Have you ever seen more beautiful plaids in lambswool, mohair and/or cashmere? I haven't and I'm in love!

Kilmainham Goal

A decommissioned jail may at first blush seem an odd place to recommend and yet, like Alcatraz, Kilmainham is strangely compelling--but what makes it a real 'must see' is its place in history of the Republic.  It was here that the Irish Nationalists were jailed--and many subsequently hanged--during the turbulent years leading up to the 1916 Easter Uprising.  So central is it to the country's concept of victorious struggle that is often referred to as the 'Irish Bastille'. 

National Botanical Gardens

A very green spot in a very green land, the National Botanical Gardens feature many fine plant collections and its astounding and vast Victorian-era Palm House and Conservatory.

Howth and Howth Head

A suburb's distance from Dublin, at the mouth of Dublin Bay, Howth has somehow manage to retain its historic fishing village feel--and the seafood restaurants of Howth are reason enough to make this short trek.  The star of the show, though, is the 3.75 mile cliff walk around Howth Head, the stately promontory that rises above the village.  Very beautiful and with terrific views of back over Dublin proper and across the wide and open Irish Channel. 

Glendalough

As with Howth, there are at least two reasons to make this hour drive south into County Wicklow.  One--the one on level ground--is to be found in the hauntingly beautiful remains of a monastery that was founded in 7th century and flourished in this Edenic spot until the 14th century.  The other is the hike up into the headlands above the monastery that provides spectacular views of the sea and surrounding countryside. But be forwarned, this walk, however rewarding, is not for the faint of heart--or for those afraid of heights.  The trail is smooth, well traveled and has fairly steady inclines--but no other mountains I know of have sides that fall away as precipitously as those of the Wicklow Mountains!

The Shelburne Hotel 

These grand hotels can have a hard time maintaining their glory--and I can't vouch for The Shelburne based on recent personal experience--but it will always have special place in my heart as the beautiful grand dame overlooking St Stephen's Green. In the meantime, the equally luxurious Merrion Hotel and Intercontinental Dublin are giving The Shelburne a run for it's money as is the more designed-focused the Marker Hotel.  My guess is that you can't go wrong here with any of these choices--though none are for small pocketbooks.  Dublin's hotels tend to be on high side so it might wise to be prepared to splurge...


Hopefully, this is  enough to get you started. Dublin is wonderful. So go...!

 

 

 

 

 


A CITY A WEEK...VINALES, CUBA

 Today we post on Vinales, Cuba, and then we're going to take a bit of a break. We will resume weekly posts on Tuesday, July 5th, when we return from an unusually busy period of  travel but for now and without further ado...VINALES

This magic valley two and half hours north of Havana seems to have it all.  Tremendous natural beauty with a robust local economy centered on traditional--and very sustainable--agriculture. Part of the charm--and it has very great charm--of a visit to this area is a chance to visit a tobacco farm in the morning and then have a farm to table meal at a farm down the road all the while the views of the surrounding karst (limestone) formations explain this area's status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  

I am not alone in in being captivated.  

The town of Vinales has a population of 28,000 and over eight hundred bed and breakfasts.  Seemingly every household posts the Cuban symbol for 'b & b' and there is a booming trade in not only agro-tourism but eco-tourism.  Click here for an post on touring by bicycle; click here for an article on biking and horseback riding and click here for an piece on hiking and caving.  Get the picture?  Lots and lots to do and unlike much of Cuba which is seemingly in stun mode these days, overwhelmed by an unprecedented flood of tourists, the folks in Vinales are well-prepared and able to act as gracious and enthusiastic hosts and guides.  

Yet another place not to be missed in this wide and often wonderful world...

 

 

 


A CITY A WEEK HAVANA

Creo en el pueblo Cubano.

Last week during President Obama's visit to Havana, he gave a speech addressing the Cuban nation.  Our own National Public Radio sat in with a Cuban family as they listened to this address.  The assembled group included neighbors and friends all listening in respectful and attentive silence--that is until the president spoke this line: Creo en el pueblo Cubano

I can't quite characterize the response from the father of the host family--whatever it was it seemed wholly unselfconscious, deeply felt--almost a whoop--full of joy and of gratitude. And even all these miles away hearing it was deeply moving.                  

Creo en el pueblo Cubano translates into I believe in the Cuban people.   

As anyone can tell you--residents and visitors alike--contemporary Havana is not a place of things. There is so much there that must be improvised or simply gone without.  But it is a place of people, wonderfully, impressively, joyfully so... and this in turn made our recent visit there a privilege and joy.

Go now if you can.  

I am not alone in suspecting that Cuba is poised to catch up with the rest of us on the owning of things.  No doubt the culture will survive the onslaught coming its way, but now is a unique moment--after the thaw and before the deluge--when a visit to Havana serves up this lesson--things do not make a culture...and that is a very refreshing notion.

 


A CITY A WEEK...BERLIN...THEN AND NOW

The KitKat Club...we all know The KitKat Club,  that dark and naughty place which has taken up permanent residence in our collective imaginations for now these last many decades.  Home to Sally Bowles, The Emcee, Isherwood and all the other pre-War II shadow people--and a place that serves as one more example of how well we all know the Berlin of our imaginations.

The city itself exists for us, especially Americans of a certain age, as a place that we have known throughout our lives.  Born as we were in the shadow of WWII, raised on the narrative of the Wall and--then of its triumphal end--and now and for the last 25 years receiving dispatches from this city of peace, prosperity and extraordinary cultural vigor.  

Thanks to Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories, we can even claim to know Weimar Berlin, a pre-war place of self-invention, danger and indulgence.  A time and place with a sense that anything might happen and before the full blown evil of what actually did a few short years later...

Published in 1945, staged as a play, I Am A Camera, in the 1951 and then as a musical, Cabaret, in 1966, Berlin Stories's two narratives and their characters simply have not faded with time but seem to have grown in depth and resonance.  So much so that when it came time recently to choose a 'Berlin book' for an upcoming Travel Talk at Scuppernong Books, I deliberated--there are many possibilities--but finally decided on this classic.

A CITY A WEEK...FLORENCE AND ENVIRONS...

This week, I welcome back Rodney Ouzts, a wonderful friend and fellow travel enthusiast with a special passion for Italy so who better then to write on a vineyard and other delights in and around Florence?  Come evening, open a Super Tuscan or some other luscious big red, pour yourself a glass and then enjoy a wonderful little mini-visit to Tuscany, all courtesy of Rodney and his charming and transporting post...

600 Years of Winemaking: Linking History with the Future.

When visiting Florence for the first or second time, most visitors who enjoy traditional Tuscan cuisine and a fine chianti usually make a pilgrimage to the exquisite Cantinetta Antinori, a small elegant restaurant located on Via Tornabuoni right in the heart of the high end shopping district and located in the Palazzo Antinori.

Here, diners may start the meal with a glass of sparkling wine from their estate in the Franciacorta region of Italy and continue with a Pinot Nero from their vineyard in Umbria. Most come for a glass or bottle of one of their most famous Tuscan wines, Tignanello, a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes.  After all, this is the family who can be credited for creating one of the first Super Tuscan blends.

Slowly, the visitor begins to realize the reaches of this family’s wine production spread far and wide. Just in Italy, the Antinori own eight estates producing wines from the regions of Tuscany, Umbria, Piemonte, Puglia and Franciacorta.  Beyond Italy, the family owns vineyards in Hungary, Malta, Romania and Chile and the United States. In the United States, one of their vineyards in Napa Valley produces the highly regarded Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, now well known for the famous 1976 blind-tasting called the “Judgement of “Paris” in which the judges rated the best California Cabernet and Chardonnay over the best red Bordeaux and white Burgundy submitted by the French. This contest changed California winemaking forever.  The other Napa Valley estate produces the highly regarded “Antica” Cabernet Sauvignon and “Antica” Chardonnay. In the state of Washington’s Columbia River Valley, their joint effort with Chateau St. Michelle produces some of the finest red wines in the region.

The family began producing wine in 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the Florentine Vintners’ Guild.  Now, 26 generations later, they are still making wine, still searching for new vineyards, still looking for new techniques and technologies to improve the process and still taking risks. In 2012, the Antinori opened a new winery in the Chianti Classico area called Antinori nel Chianti Classico.  The result is a culmination of years of research and building. The structure itself took over five years to build.  Located about 45 minutes outside Florence in San Casciano in Val di Pesa, the winery is a blend of modern and traditional. As with most new Italian architecture, great respect is given to the surrounding countryside. Since this is Chianti Classico, the architect, Marco Casamonti, used only brown-colored materials in order to harmonize with the surrounding landscape.  He based the idea of “cutting into the hillside” on the spatial concepts of Lucio Fontana, the great Italian 20th-century artist known for his sliced canvases.

In fact, when you arrive at the winery, you barely see the structure. It rises from the hill like a bunker. You wind around the entrance drive and there it is, tucked into the hillside. One of our fellow visitors stated it felt like a scene from a James Bond film.  The Marquis Antinori said he wanted the structure to be “monumental and invisible.”  There is no doubt, he succeeded.

Once inside, the tour begins with a visit to a room filled with family artifacts followed by an interesting film on the family’s history and their massive holdings. Our tour was provided by a very kind and engaging young local woman.  She was able to explain the complicated intricacies of winemaking so well and thoroughly that even this amateur (and lousy chemistry student) remained attentive. We were then invited to sample various wines and to tour the library/tasting room. Located on top of the structure is a beautiful modern restaurant with stunning views of the countryside.

One of the striking features of the entire facility is the incorporation of modern art work and sculpture inside and outside the structure. Wherever you go whether in stairwells, hallways, or rooms, monumental sculptures surround you.  This is the work and intention of the family in what they call the “Antinori Art Project”.  Four years ago, they invited artists from around the world to create new projects linked to the specific characteristics of the site.  Among the artists represented in these installations are French artist-architect Yona Friedman, Patrick Tuffofuoco known for his multi colored neons and sculptor Rosa Barba. One of the most striking works is by Tomas Saraceno, an Argentianian artist who works in Berlin. His “biospheres” are spheres of transparent synthetic materials suspended in mid-air some even with plant materials. His work is well known to visitors to the Venice Biennial having exhibited there three times. Recently, his work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Barbican Art Centre in London, Hangar Bicocca in Milan, among many other venues. He has collaborated with both NASA and the MIT Center for Art and Technology on various projects.

After our tasting and tour, it is short drive to the nearby Osteria di Passignano, a beautiful restaurant where you can enjoy a bit little more Antinori wine or something else from the extensive wine list. We decided on a light lunch, some wine by the glass and were not disappointed. My choice was their version of a shrimp salad with greens and fresh shrimp. This was followed by agnolotti stuffed with pork. I decided not to have dessert but that decision changed when a perfectly beautiful silver basket was brought to the table filled with almond cream, miniature panatonne and small pastries.

After so much indulgence, we felt the need for a little spiritual inspiration and a walk so we wandered up the hill to the abbey, Badia a Passignano. A local priest provided a tour. Our main reason for the visit was to view the recently restored “Last Supper” by Domenico Ghirlandaio. It was created around 1476 and is the first of a series. Later, Ghirlandaio would create another “Last Supper” in refectory of the Convent of Ognissanti and in San Marco in Florence. I have viewed the others and do believe this is the most moving and beautiful.  Having originated as a monastery before 1000 and later ruled by the Vallombrosan order,   the Badia is a wonderful complex and still in use. We were given a full tour by the kind priest including a visit to the chapel, kitchen and gardens.

The vine cultivation at the abbey goes as far back as the 11th century. It is located in a protected area and in keeping with tradition, the Antinori family purchased 325 hectares of land around the abbey in 1987 and soon after started producing their Badia a Passignano Chianti Classico Riserva.  They even use the ancient cellars located on the property to age and store the wine.

With respect to history and a look to the future, the Antinori family continues an Italian tradition of wine production, preservation, innovation and building. Marquis Piero is still involved in the business, but now most of the operation is run by the three daughters, Albiera, Allegra and Alessia, three competent talented women.  Isn’t it a wonderful twist that after 600 years in a historically male-dominated business these women run the operation; yet, it is also fitting for this family of innovators and creative risk-takers in the winemaking world.

A CITY A WEEK...MIAMI PART II

As odd as it may sound--as odd as it may be--I have never bothered to replace my notion of Miami as the place where Tubbs and Crockett spend their days still sporting black tees under pastel blazers, loving the ladies while fighting drug loads and other darkly glamorous riffraff.  

I realize there is a good chance you as a reader may not even get this reference.  Miami Vice.  Don Johnson. Philip Michael Thomas.  1984.

In short, a very long time ago.

A ridiculously long time ago.  And, in fact, I did know better but I have not seen better until my recent visit.  What makes this especially silly is that for well over a decade now the city has hosted Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the more important art fairs--and the largest in the world. The fair lasts for a few days in early December but its presence seems to have resulted in some kind of gene splicing.  Miami and contemporary art over the past several years have entered into each other's DNA.

 As I say, I knew this.  I really, really did.  But even so the image of this city as more music video and less art capital just got stuck in my brain and until this flying visit no amount competing data could dislodge it.

I have now seen for myself what a crazy contemporary art place Miami has become.  Out with Tubbs and Crockett and in with The Margulies Collection, The Craig Robbins Collection, The de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space and The Rubell Family Collection.  And those are just the private museums.   Open to the public but privately owned and operated.  This model is not without controversy--issues mainly center around long-term financial sustainability--nor it is unique to Miami--but it seems to have really taken off in this city and at least for now is positively flooding the city with opportunities to see great contemporary art of truly international scope and often at little or no cost to the public.  

Miami also has a stand-out public contemporary art museum, the recently relocated--and renamed--Perez Art Museum Miami.  A spectacular addition to Miami's cultural scene.

The Margulies Collection at The Warehouse resides in a converted warehouse in the sizzling Wynwood Art District and boasts the finest in contemporary and vintage eccentricities. Famed Miami art collector Martin Z. Margulies has gathered photography, videos, installations and sculptures since the late nineties and brought them together in this 45,000 square feet of exhibition space. The Margulies Collection features unforgettable marvels like a towering geometric matrix and an entire train cutout that will leave you awestruck. This collection is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an admission fee of ten dollars.

Nestled in a corporate office in the Design District, the Craig Robins Collection at Dacra showcases the exuberant spirit of contemporary art and design. Real estate mogul Craig Robins perpetually seeks to integrate art and community by providing public access to his collection of over 200 artists’ works. The pieces revolve several times annually, drawing mainly from German, Mexican, Chinese and American artists. But some creators like Richard Tuttle and John Baldessari reside permanently amidst this disarming and often humorous medley. The Craig Robins Collection is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment.

CIFO / Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 2002 by Ella Fontanals-Cisneros and her family to support art and artists who are exploring new directions in contemporary art. CIFO fosters cultural understanding and educational exchange through three primary initiatives: Grants and Commissions Programs for emerging and mid-career visual artists from Latin America; an exhibitions program showcasing work by Latin American artists and international contemporary art from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection at CIFO Art Space; and foundation-initiated support for other arts and culture projects. Exhibition Hours: Thursday: Noon- 9 p.m.; Friday- Sunday: Noon- 5p.m. Exhibition Hours apply only during exhibition dates.

Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz beckon enthusiasts to The de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space, Miami’s only free private art collection. The couple even exercises the same benevolence at home, where many view their private collection by appointment. A journey through the Design District’s Contemporary Art Space commences with the amorphous, fluorescent forms of Aaron Curry and progresses to the second story where Kathryn Andrews’ giant birthday candles leave you feeling dwarfed as if in a dream. On the top level, Jim Hodges’ delicate floral installations lie feet away from the largest ping-pong table you’ll ever see, making this one surreal playpen. The de la Cruz Collection at the Contemporary Art Space is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. 

The Rubell Family espouses art education with one of the world’s largest, privatized contemporary art collections and their Contemporary Arts Foundation. The cornerstone of an international enterprise, the 45,000-square-foot Rubell Family Collection/Contemporary Arts Foundation champions established and emerging artists alike. Recently, the foundation received a major donation of artwork by California artists from Boston collector Kenneth L. Freed.  Mr. Freed’s significant gift includes 59 sculptures and 14 works on paper by Taft Green, Patrick Hill, Evan Holloway, David Ireland, Alice Könitz, Lisa Lapinski, Charles Long, Jason Meadows, Jeff Ono, Robert Overby, Torbjörn Vejvi, Nicolau Vergueiro and John Williams.  The collection is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with an admission fee of ten dollars.

What can I say?  Simply amazing and not a pastel blazer in sight....


A CITY A WEEK...MIAMI PART I

I have to honest--this one is a teaser for next week's post.   I am in Havana with no access to the internet so this week has got to be quick.  I have set up a picture show of photos taken this part Saturday at Miami's Rubell Family Collection.  Miami deserves more time--so much more time...so look for Miami Part II next week when I will have much more to say about the Rubell, a fabulous private museum, part of a trend in these parts, along with other highlights in this art-obsessed town.

A CITY A WEEK...MUNICH

I am often asked how I research my trips, especially when a destination is being offered for the first time.  There are a million ways and pulling the pieces of the puzzle together is all part of the fun of what I do.  Truth be told, I could not do what I do in the absence of the internet.  Reading reviews, scouring 'best of' lists, comparing guides all require the same level of attention and technique whether the destination is a stone's throw from home or thousands of miles away.  The essential thing is to go deep.

In addition, to every review site know to man there is also the delightful and far more personal resource of blogs. Pick a subject and there is a blogger--usually many, many bloggers so do a Google search and you are almost assured of finding a deep bench of local bloggers on any city in this world. Some content is terrific; some indifferent; but when you hit a good one--it's insider gold.  Case in point--'Emily’s Munich', from National Geographic's I HEART MY CITY blog series.  

My inveterate travel planning partner Kristin Peterson Edwards knows Munich well so when we recently planned a Munich trip for a private group I was already in good hands. In fact, our itinerary was set before I stumbled across Emily's Munich but reading this post is a wonderful reminder of how very rich and 'granular' such these blogs can be.  

I urge you to read the original to fully appreciate the breadth and depth of all that is covered and so for that click here.  But here's a sample to pique your curiosity:

A CITY A WEEK...THE BRONX

Bear with me here--I do indeed mean that Bronx, which as it turns out is a place that is simply full of surprises!  

Why else would it be a stop along the way on our upcoming Gardens of The Hudson Valley trip, offered in partnership with Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden?

Yes, we will be in the Bronx when we visit the glorious and vast New York Botanical Garden (NYBG). And the fact that the NYBG is there is no historical accident...

The Bronx is one of the most densely populated county’s in the United States and yet about a quarter of its 42 square miles is open space, including not only the NYBG, but Van Cortlandt Park, Pelham Bay Park and the Bronx Zoo to mention a few treasured green spaces.  Much of this land was intentionally reserved in response to a burgeoning awareness of the value of urban planning by New York's late 19th civic leaders.

So rural was this area at BYBG's creation that an astounding 50 acres of old-growth virgin forest including a pristine section of the Bronx River was incorporated into its design and is preserved to this day.  (I'm not sure I even knew there was a Bronx River...and pristine I wouldn't have guessed...).  

See what I mean, though? The Bronx is full of surprises...

And while we are on the NYBG,  this 250-acre treasure simply has to be seen to be appreciated.  The thumbnails above give but a hint of its glory.  If you are ready for more then naturally we hope you sign up to come along with us this summer on our trip. Treasures of New York: The New York Botanical Garden

At 27 minutes it is a bit of a commitment I have to admit but I think I can promise that you will not regret this investment of time.

It gives a rewarding look at this sea of tranquility in a complex world--and, after all, isn't that  what a great garden should be...a sea of tranquility in a complex world?

I think so but I hope you will come along to see for yourself--with us or on your own--this is not to be missed...

 


A CITY A WEEK...CHARLOTTE, NC

Charlotte is just down the road from my longtime neck of the woods.  It’s also my hometown--though it's sometimes easy to forget that part since it is truly hard to imagine a town more changed by the last 4 or 5 decades than Charlotte. Once sleepy, now sleek, what takes me back these days are not childhood ties but Charlotte’s extarordinary cultural scene.

There are an outsized number of museums and/or arts institutions.  Take for example the Mario Botta designed Bechtler Museum of Modern Art with its 1,400 plus works by mid-20th century masters such as Picasso, Calder and Warhol not to mention that signature Nikki de Saint Phalle sculpture at the entrance that never fails to delight with its outlandish good humor.

And right next door to The Bechtler is The Mint Museum Uptown with permanent collections focused on contemporary and American art as well as craft and design.  

Not so far away from this Mint is the other Mint Museum--Mint Museum Randolph, with its important permanent collections of historical costumes and Native American art.  (And here’s a little known fun fact (or a very well known one if you were ever a school-aged child in this heritage-proud town)--this Mint, the ‘Randolph’ one, is housed in a gorgeous 1835 Federalist building which was indeed originally a US Mint.  The first US gold rush, in the early 1800’s, was in Cabarrus County just north of Charlotte, hence the location of this Mint which specialized in gold coinage.)

For more history there is the Levine Museum of the New South, an interactive history museum that documents the complex evolution of post-Civil War southern society. 

And for more intimate, often regional--but not strictly--art experiences, there are the McColl Center for Art + Innovation, a contemporary art center and residency program with over 5,000 square feet of gallery space and, The Light Factory, one of only four museums for photography and film in the country.

Pretty good for a once sleepy town, huh?

...and that’s maybe not even the very best part.  The ultimate draw may just be the results of Charlotte’s enthusiast embrace of public art. 

Since I am a complete and hopeless believer in images and experiences over words,  I won’t even try to convey how rich this all is.  What I will do is provide one photo--courtesy of the internet-and this invaluable link to a 45-minute self-guided podcast (click here) along with a map (click here), from The Arts and Science Council of Charlotte--a marvelous introduction to all that Charlotte has to offer in public art.

One final note--even this super culture geek does know that as of this past Sunday night there is yet one more reason to be proud of my hometown.

A CITY A WEEK...KENNETT SQUARE, PENNSYLVANIA

I first visited Kennett Square on one those epic Couch family car trips back in the 1970's.  It then felt more village than town.  Mid-Atlantic rural and with an economy centered almost entirely around one crop--white button mushrooms--that were grown in microscopically small family farming operations.  The farming, such as it was, took place in half-buried root cellar-style buildings.  

When we stopped at a family's farm to buy some mushrooms, the teenage son manning the family's stand let us tour their 'mushroom nursery'.  He said he wasn't really allowed to do this but I think he was just too embarrassed to say 'no' to my mother, whose curiosity was greater than her disinclination to put a young person on the spot in this way.  In we went and though it took all of about 5 minutes, the image has stayed with me ever after. Not because it was so interesting or beautiful but more because it was just so simple--such a simple way to make the earth yield up a living. I am sure it has changed since then in scale and in every other possible way but that day it felt every bit as quaint and exotic as farm life always seems to be in fairytales.

So why Kennett Square today and all these years later?  Honestly, it has absolutely nothing much to do with that long-ago day except that for me I can never think of Kennett Square without thinking of both the mushroom farms and of its other extraordinary claim to fame--Longwood Gardens.  

And trust me on this, just the thought of Longwood Gardens is a positive tonic on a day like today. 

Longwood is beautiful any time of year but to step into that conservatory, that mammoth gorgeous, heavenly (heaven-like?) conservatory is to be relieved of the weight of winter and possibly all the other weights of this world.

I always think of Longwood on a day like today.

Longwood is easily reached from Philadelphia, Baltimore or even D.C. so please put it on your itinerary next time you head up the eastern seaboard.  But it's frigid now and it's post-holiday now and, speaking for myself, I could use a vacation from a thousand small winter worries now--so I say 'why wait'?  What we need are some photos now.

A CITY A WEEK...COPENHAGEN

I am a lucky girl--which I did know already but this remark is occasioned in particular appreciation of my friend Kristin Peterson Edwards.  Kristin and I came together through our love of travel, art and food--and not long after meeting we were leading trips together.  Berlin in 2014 and Buenos Aires in 2015. Now looking ahead to 2016, we have Berlin back on the schedule and a very exciting new offering--Copenhagen.   We are still putting the finishing touches on that itinerary but it's almost done and it will be coming your way very soon.  In the meantime, I thought I would share the inspiration for choosing Copenhagen--Kristin's fantastic, fun and fabulous trip there last summer.  She wrote a terrific recap of it for her blog, kpeARTS, reposted below. 

It should probably come with a warning, though--it's so good you are almost certainly going to be hooked--just like me!

Copenhagen :: sea + art + salmon

C o p e n h a g e n - a northern city of light...

About a week ago I had the privilege to visit a dear friend of mine, who is both Danish and an artist.  Charlotte lives near me in the States but has a summer cottage in Tisvildeleje, Denmark on the northwest coast of the Danish island of Sjælland.  The village, which sits along the coast, is about 40 miles from Copenhagen and was the perfect haven to spend some time in Denmark.  It reminded me of a smaller version Montauk with some residential areas similar to the Dunes in Amagansett.  And it was so easy to get in and out of Copenhagen.

I arrived early on Monday and spent the morning wandering around the old part of Copenhagen around the Nyhavn.  The streets were just waking up but the light was spectacular.  I almost had the city to myself.  The cafés were just opening up and trucks were making deliveries of fish and produce.  Locals were just starting to fill the streets on their bikes.  After a while I found a corner bistro to sit, have a coffee and plan the rest of my morning.

Bar Central was the perfect spot and off the beaten path.

After a little refreshment and rest for my feet, I headed to the King's Garden a few blocks away for a visit to Rosenberg Castle, which was built by the King Christian IV, one of Scandanavia's most famous royals.  The castle now houses an incredible collection of intricate decorative arts as well as Denmark's Crown jewels.  The gardens were exquisite and in full bloom -- the square park with it's surrounding buildings reminded me of Place des Voges in Paris.   

I continued my walking tour past the Round Tower, and through the Købmagergade - the pedestrian shopping street - to the Amagertorv Square.  The old part of the city with all of it's spires and unique rooflines is like a trip back to medieval times.  Now the neighborhood is filled with all of the stores of Fifth Avenue as well as the Denmark's own Georg Jensen and Royal Copenhagen

.  

I eventually made my way to Café Victor , a local hot spot, where I was meeting Charlotte for lunch.  I was thrilled to enjoy a traditional Scandanavian treat that my father has always loved -- spicy herring.  And it was prepared with all the fixings normally associated with smoked salmon - robust capers, red onion and créme fraiche.  And the typical dark Danish bread - rugbrød.  It was the perfect welcome meal in Copenhagen.  After lunch, we walked to one of the canals where we boarded an hour-long siteseeing tour of Copenhagen via the water.  Many of the landmark buildings - both old and contemporary - are situated along the water front - including the new "black diamond"  national library and the Copenhagen opera house.

After a full day as tourists, we drove the 50 minute trip north to Tisvildeleje where we had an early dinner and called it a night.  

One of my incentives for making the trip to Denmark was to visit the Louisiana Museum of Contemporary Art , which is north of Copenhagen and about a  40 minute drive from Tisvildeje.  The museum was founded in 1958 as a collection of Knud W. Jensen’s so-called “sauna principle”.  

Jensen divided the exhibitions into hot and cold varieties: The hot consisted of artists that the guests already knew – the great modern classics – while the cold gave room for names the guests had never heard of – the less easily accessible, often contemporary artists.

The permanent collection is worth the visit alone but it was also fabulous to see the Peter Doig exhibition.  The collection has exquisite examples from the most important modern and contemporary artists.  The property is perfectly manicured along the sea and landmark sculptures are prominently installed in the grass.  I loved being able to look across the water at Sweden where my father's family is from - another destination at the top of my "to go" list.

After an incredible afternoon looking at art in one of the most beautiful settings, we returned to Tisvildeleje and ate at a new local tapas restaurant Kongernes .  Known for their beef, we split a steak entrée which was cooked to perfection.  And we did back flips over the cheese platter we had for dessert -- complete with  rhubarb confit.  The outdoor seating with it's "wood-stack" wall was chic and inviting.

The next day we returned to Copenhagen to go to the National Gallery of Artand visit some of the Scandanavian design stores.  The National Gallery was recently renovated with a beautiful sleek addition to house much of  it's contemporary collection.  It's located on an exterior corner of the King's Gardens across from Rosenbørg Castle and the rear of the building overlooks a beautiful pond filled with swans.  The National Gallery is Denmark's largest art museum and entry is free. 

The collection houses a rich and varied selection of art - ranging from the European classics of the Renaissance to amazing international works of modern and contemporary art.  The museum is known for it's gorgeous collection of the Danish Golden Age art, the most comprehensive collection of Danish contemporary art.  It also boasts an impressive collection of works by Matisse.  I was truly blown away by the building itself and we spent several hours there working up an appetite for lunch.

After several hours at the National Gallery, we headed to the Copenhagen old city core where we had lunch at the vintage 70s spot Café Dan Turell, named for the influential Danish writer.  While in Denmark, I embraced my Swedish roots and enjoyed salmon and herring as every meal that I could.  So I was thrilled with my salmon sandwich complete with fresh dill, arugula, tomatoes, radishes and a Danish smoked cheese.

We had hoped to visit a few contemporary galleries after lunch but found many of them to be closed for the summer vacation or for installation.  I had hoped to at least make it to Nicolai Wallner Gallery but that just means I have to make another trip back to Denmark. 

 Instead we hit a few of the Danish design stores, notably Illums Bolighus, which is a multi-story department store that boasts everything from housewares, furniture to clothing and baby gifts.  I could have spent hours there but luckily we had a parking meter to attend to.  I was able to find a few treats there to take home to friends and family. 

On the way back to the car, we breezed into the newly renovated five-star Hotel d'Angleterre .  Every detail was accounted for and it is fabulous in every way - - from the flowers inside and out, to the curve of the bar counter in the lobby lounge and the lush plum colored fabric on the lobby furniture.

We returned to Tisvildeleje and enjoyed a drink at one of the local cafés where live music was playing. And then we prepared a lovely Danish meal back at Charlotte's which of course included salmon!

For my last day, we explored the landscape and beaches in Tisvildeleje.  The scenery and the light are works of art and so I was snapping photos all day.  We took a two hour walk through the forest along the coast and perused the local shops in town.  We also made an excursion to a local butcher where they cure and prepare all of their own grass-fed beef and pork.  I was so excited to be successful in smuggling some of their sausages home to the States.

The highlight of that day though was our prix-fixe dinner at Helenekilde Badenhotel .  Earlier in the week, we had been to the hotel after dinner in town to watch the sunset from the terrace, but the restaurant had been booked until tonight.  The beach front boutique hotel exemplifies simplicity and luxury all wrapped up in one. 

The first course was a fresh pea and avocado soup garnished with fresh herbs from their garden.  The veal was cooked perfectly in a red wine reduction with chanterelle mushrooms and grilled leeks. And for dessert we were served an elder flower pound cake topped with homemade raspberry sorbet and fresh strawberries.  It was a memorable meal. 

We took our coffee outside on the porch where we watched the sun set at 10:45pm.  If only everyday could remain light like that. 

It was the perfect ending to a quick visit to Denmark.  All I can say is that I wasn't disappointed and I can't wait to return.  It was a fabulous introduction to all things Danish.

A CITY A WEEK...BERLIN

How many times have I written about Berlin?  Okay, I'll admit it--several times--but that's only because it is one of my favorite cities in all the world.  I find it wonderfully rewarding in many ways including that there are innumerable sites.

I am beginning to know the city well and yet there are still important and entrancing sites that I have yet to visit.  Charlottenburg Palace is a rather extraordinary case in point. It is more than a 'mere' palace.  Designed, built and expanded during the reigns of a number of Prussian monarchs beginning with the eponymous Queen Charlotte in 1695, the palace includes outstanding examples of German Baroque and Rococo design.

Befitting a royal residence Charlottenburg Palace also has vast grounds featuring a variety of landscape styles.  These include formal gardens in the Baroque style, more informal gardens in the English style as well as woodlands and waterscapes.  There are a number of noted ancillary buildings scattered throughout the complex including the Belvedere and the Royal Mausoleum.

What can I say?  One more reason to go, n'est pas?  Or should that be ist nicht?

A CITY A WEEK...SANTA FE

Santa Fe is one of my favorite places on this earth and only more so during the holidays.  The snow lays deep here in the high desert and traditions abound, especially on Christmas Eve when the annual Farolito Walk takes place. It's a grand tradition and one I find deeply moving whenever I am lucky enough to be a part of it.  Farolitos ('luminarias' to those of us from the East) line the streets and the rooflines of every pathway and property throughout the historic center of town.  There are bonfires, caroling and open houses.  Strangers welcome you into their homes with cider and green chili stew.  Spanish hymns and scripture readings, impromptu gatherings of faith and camaraderie.  A chance at least once a year to remember that we are a family not bound by race, class or religion but by the joy of being alive and of being together.  

  It is far from a perfect world, but it sure can be beautiful.  I always appreciate the chance to be  reminded of that.  And in that spirit, I wish you and yours all the joy of the season.

A CITY A WEEK...THE HUDSON VALLEY

I know! I know! It's a region, not a city...but I can think of few places in this world that like the beautiful Hudson Valley are most aptly and evocatively described as a whole rather than by naming a collection of individual cities, towns and villages.

 I happen to have been thinking about this a lot recently as I have been working on the itinerary for 'Gardens of The Hudson Valley', a June 2016 trip being offered in partnership with PAUL J. CIENER BOTANICAL GARDEN, a lovely and relatively new garden in Kernersville, North Carolina.  As always seems to happen by the end of creating an itinerary I feel as though I have not merely been thinking about a place but rather that I have actually been transported to it during the course of the several days it takes to work through the logistics and fit together all the pieces.  I like this sense of having taken a little, unscheduled junket all on my own.  And I find it's not unlike the feeling of flying in a dream--mentally moving over and across land and cityscapes.  You see things differently, but distinctly, and patterns begin to emerge as you spend this kind of time with a place. And the pattern for the Hudson Valley? That one's easy. I would say it could be summed up in a word: grandeur.  There is a pattern of grandeur in the Hudson Valley beginning with its primeval landscape.  This is the landscape, after all,  that inspired the Hudson River School, the first great, distinctly American art movement.  This original grandeur is still very much a living presence up and down the river and often in the most unexpected places, including in and around New York City.  The river is that mighty and the vistas that splendid.  What has struck me most, however, in this recent 'visit' to the region is that this grandeur seems to have acted as a powerful inspiration on the men and women who have lived there over the centuries. It shows up again and again in what has been imagined and then made. Whether it be Kykuit, the 3400-acre Rockefeller Estate in Pontico Hills; Storm King, with its 500 acres of  sculpture park or West Point, which looms over the river as a vast, gorgeous Gothic fortress.  I even see grandeur in the imperfect and soon to be replaced Tappan Zee Bridge.  This is a landscape that invites large visions, ones that seem to aspire to be the equal of nature's grandeur. 

The 'Gardens of The Hudson Valley' itinerary will be released later this week to the membership of Paul J. Ciener Botanical Gardens and shortly after that to those who have signed up through Studio Traveler for 'Early Bird Info'.  In two weeks, it will then be released to the general public.  Whenever you see it, I hope it inspires you to join us on this adventure or if that is not meant to be then that it leads you to explore this region on your own.  With a particular focus or no focus at all, it makes for a great ramble where even getting lost can have its rewards.

A CITY A WEEK...HAVANA, CUBA

Yes, we are going and I couldn't be more excited about that! If you want some scoop on our upcoming trip CLICK HERE.  As of this morning, there are officially 2 spots left—and one of these could be yours!   

Honestly, though, I am just as excited about another 'Cuba event', albeit one that is much closer to home.  I've been invited to facilitate Scuppernong Books' next Travel Talk book discussion. Co-owner David White has graciously allowed me to pick the book and the city--so I have picked one of my all time favorite romps: Graham Greene’s Our Man In Havana.

In Our Man In Havana, we have both a farce that still has the power to delight 6 decades after its publication and a book that provides a potent platform for discussing Havana, past and present.

Intended as a straightforward farce, the story tells the tale of a British ex-pat, James Wormold, stuck in pre-Revolutionary Havana selling vacuum cleaners–or attempting to—while also raising—or attempting to—a crazy-gorgeous 16-year daughter. Subsequent ‘real world’ events, however, now mean that the book also brims with historical resonance.

  Havana is evoked as a thoroughly corrupt city teeming with Cold War intrigue and languorous if chilling danger.  Strangely it is also recognizable as the city we know today, with infrastructure that has slowly been aging in place for most of our lifetimes, effectively arrested in time just weeks after the events depicted in the book. In the fact, the revolution occurred in January 1959, one short month after the book’s publication date.

In another uncanny bit of historical convergence, the storyline revolves around the threat posed by the apparently imminent installation of Soviet missiles.  This foreshadows the very real world Cuban Missile Crisis by 4 years.  Mercifully, in the book the threat is purely farcical—Wormold, in a desperate attempt to come up with intelligence, does some clever sketching of his Hoover attachments.

I have one other recommendation for Our Man In Havana--one that is neither historical or travel related—and that is the book's language.   Greene, along with Evelyn Waugh, uses language in a way that seems to me thoroughly and uniquely British; complex, sophisticated, seemingly effortless, witty, world-weary and true believer all in one.

I have to admit to never tiring of reading either of  these mid-century comedic geniuses…

A CITY A WEEK...BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

When I started 'A CITY A WEEK...' it had a slightly longer name: 'A CITY A WEEK AND WHY...'. As a working title it quickly felt too long but as a rationale, it is still a guiding principle. I always hope to highlight the why this or that place is worth a visit.

I was reminded of this this past week when in Buenos Aires with travel planning partner extraordinaire, Kristin Peterson Edwards of KPE ARTS.

As I mentioned in last week’s post—I am in love!  Move over London, Berlin or Venice.  There’s a new city on my mind and its initials are ‘BA’.

 What makes any place special can never be fully answered in the absence of a visit.  There is just too much that can’t be imagined without the benefit of firsthand experience.

 The odd thing about Buenos Aires though is it is a lot like other places--in a good and very beguiling way. It’s a beaux arts city to rival Paris.  It’s physical vastness means that this elegance feels like DNA—not a block here or a district there but preserved enough to be clustered around elegant squares and plazas throughout the city.

 Its charm, though, is not just in its physical beauty but in how it feels to be there—and how it feels is great.  Buenos Aires is very, very livable. There are certain economic oddities about life in Argentina to be sure--but we heard again and again from Portenos of all stripes that they truly love living in their vibrant, beautiful city—in fact, they would not consider living anywhere else.

 So that’s the backdrop—gorgeous and livable—but there is so, so much more to love.  The food scene is terrific.  The ‘closed door’ mainstay Casa Saltshaker; the elegant Roux; the wonderful waterside Cabanas Las Lilas or the crazy good I Latina. All excellent and overflowing with energy.  That’s just a starter list, btw...

The shopping? I am convinced that BA has some the best shopping on this planet.  There are some of the usual suspects--both luxury and fast fashion brands--but what really distinguishes this scene is its originality.  Argentina is far, far away from so much and its economics make importing expensive.  The response to these combined realities is an explosion of interesting well-designed goods from the ‘well-priced’ to the ultra-luxe. Here’s a short list: Cardon; Calma Chicha; Anne Bonny; Prüne; Chocolate; Ariête; a whole wonderland of specialty shops at the various Bullrich locations; the best museum gift shop ever at MALBA and a fine local crafts weekend market in Recoleta. Honestly, I’m just getting started.  I would go back just to shop…the leather goods alone are the most swoon-worthy I may have ever seen… (A brief word about pricing lest one risk death by sticker shock when pursuing these links.  '$' is the symbol for both the dollar and the Argentine peso.  The actual rate of exchange? It is surprisingly fluid.  Currently, it ranges from 9 to 15 pesos to the dollar...)

The contemporary art scene is equally fresh and original with fine museums and galleries throughout the city.  Latin American photography in particular is enjoying a well-deserved surge in international interest.  Thanks to the extraordinary Rolf Art, we experienced some of Argentina’s best with a gallery visit with Adriana Lestido and studio visits with Santiago Porter, Nicola Constantino and Gabriel Valansi. A day of pure pleasure and overflowing with talent.

 We stayed at Hotel Mio—a big thumbs up on that choice both for its boutique charm and its excellent location--and we drank lots of Argentine Malbec—maybe a little tiny bit too much Malbec—but every glass was excellent from the humblest house to the most expensive splurge. 

Spring comes to Buenos Aires.  

I know I always say it but this time I mean it in a whole new way: ‘Go’.  You will love it.  Really.
